WINSTON CHURCHILL MASAKENG SAOLI (South Africa, 1950 - 1995) - Children of African charcoal and chalk on torn corrugated cardboard, both signed, in matching mahogany molded frame, matted and glazed, the irregular forms laid to tan corduroy. OS: 17" x 14", SS: 9 1/2" x 7" & 7 1/2" x 5", good condition. Per wiki: (An established artist, ) "he was arrested for attending (anti-apartheid) ANC-meetings at the Witwatersrand University in 1972. He was locked up in solitary confinement, without trial, for six months. This experience had a far-reaching and lasting effect on his life. After his release he started to live an unsettled life, and for many years periodically lived the life of a vagrant on Johannesburg streets. He died on a street corner in May 1995". These are typical of his 'street art' of later years.
