William Merritt Chase, (1849-1916) - Jester Resting on a Chair

Item Description:

William Merritt Chase, (1849-1916) - Jester Resting on a Chair

This painting is included in Ronald G. Pisano's The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). It will be recorded in The Pisano/Chase Catalogue Project files of The Kellen Archives, The New School, New York, as FAA.76. The work is one of several pertaining to Chase's well known and documented, The Court Jester, 1875 (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts), sent to the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Likely Chase painted a number 'trial poses' before he settled on The Court Jester; however, since the work cited above is signed and dated, it is not unreasonable to consider it a finished work in and of itself. The wood chest upon which a vase and, what appears to be, a brass charger rest can also be seen in the background of another 'trial pose' Serenade to a Cockatoo, 1875, Catalogue Raisonné No. F.5 (location unknown), and same vase on the chest in The King's Jester, 1875, Catalogue Raisonné No. F.4 (location unknown). Jester Resting on a Chair, displays the dashing brushwork which so characterized Chase's work during his years as a student at the Royal Munich Academy (1872-1877). But the bold use of red in the pants and cape decorated with brass bells reveals the extent to which the young Chase enlivened the work. He was determined to paint with brio and gusto to make his mark as a new and energized presence on the art scene.
