Item Description:

Inscribed along the front edge "V. VELA. 1867." and along the reverse "F. BARBEDIENNE. Fondeur" with the accompanying A. Collas reduction seal. Cast circa the last quarter of the 19th century by the firm of Ferdinand Barbedienne, this model of "The Last Days of Napoleon" is without question the finest sculpture of Vela's career. Sculpted in 1866 and exhibited in the 1867 French International Exhibition, the original was purchased by Napoleon III at the exhibition. Chiseled with inordinate care, the surface is finished in a deep brown patina under wax.
