Item Description:

Blow torch and pigment on wood

24 x 23 7/8 in. (61 x 60.7 cm.)

Signed 'JERAM PATEL' lower left and further signed, dated and inscribed 'JERAM PATEL / 74' 'BARODA / FROM THE SERIES OF 1961' on reverse

Jeram Patel's works created in wood using a blow torch are wonderfully sculptural, even though they are conceived as wall-mounted compositions. The artist began working in this manner because he felt constrained by the traditional mediums of brush and canvas, and wanted to go beyond the possibilities offered by a one-dimensional surface. '...For he is not trying to create an illusion of a thing but the thing itself, not an illusion of dimension, but dimension itself, materially, not colour as an imposition but as resident pigment in the thing itself.' (Jagdish Swaminathan, 'Painter with Blow-flame', reproduced in Lalit Kala Contemporary 40, New Delhi, March 1995, p. 29)

Using thick pieces of wood, he created varied and unique shapes that would emerge ‘…revealing and invoking the image through its journey into the many layers of wood, etching it into its very fabric till the wood is the image and the image is the wood… What the searing flame brings into being is an image of barbaric beauty, haunting and thrilling.’ (ibid.)
