'As I began to paint, the landscapes came naturally and gradually, the outlines faded into abstracts... There is an enigmatic mystery about the inner life of a colour applied on canvas. It stands out of by itself in the beginning but slowly it starts building up relationships with other areas, other colours, and forms. This continues. There is a pause, a silence, an accident and in the end some sort of harmony.'
(Ram Kumar, Remembering Ram Kumar An Exhibition, exhibition catalogue, Saffronart, Mumbai, 2019, p. 63)
The colours of the original are less saturated and slightly brighter with greater tonal variations, than the catalogue illustration. The painting has been recently cleaned and varnished. Two small one inch patches and a larger patch of previous repair visible on the reverse, corresponding to areas of consolidation on the front of the canvas. (A 3-4 inch Y shaped repair in the lower right and two smaller ones, one to the right and one above the larger area). Scattered areas of craquelure visible in all brown areas of the painting and in
the light grey area at the centre upper edge, with further cracks in the blue area in the lower left quadrant. When examined under UV light, scattered small spots of retouching visible in the brown areas and one in the turquoise area. Overall fair condition.
