'Ram Kumar avoids curves and works with straight lines which often take an angular turn creating a forceful movement in the painting. His multi-layered treatment of patches of tones and the play of vertical and horizontal forms appear if they stem from the stratigraphy of an underground city of the old.' (Jyotindra Jain, exhibition catalogue, Centre for Contemporary Arts, New Delhi,19 90, reprinted in Gagan Gill (ed.), Ram Kumar A Journey Within, New Delhi, 1996, p. 164)
The current work, dated to 1995, is an exemplary example of Ram Kumar's later paintings and illustrates the change in his landscapes from the early period (see lot 32) to the 1990s. The artist is able to break down forms and ideas into an abstracted core and he is able to both look beyond and to look within. Whilst his interest in the landscape remains constant, the palette, application of paint and spatial divisions have changed considerably. The primarily blue tones of the current work, complemented with grey and white evokes a lightness and expanse within the entire painting.
The colours of the original are slightly less saturated when compared to the catalogue illustration, especially within the upper band of greens along the top edge, with a wider range of tonal contrasts throughout. Good overall condition.
