Born in Siraha, Nepal, in 1939, Laxman Shreshtha grew up in Darbhanga, north of Bihar and studied in Patna. Shreshtha's desire to become an artist led to conflict within the family and he decided to run away, which led him to move to Mumbai, where he studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art. At twenty two, Shreshtha won a scholarship to study art in Paris at Ecole National Superieure des Beaux Arts, and later studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and completed his art studies at the Central School of Art in London.

Shreshtha's paintings are driven by his restless search for a homeland. His works draw on the soaring mountains, valleys and rivers of his childhood. Among the many striking things about the artist's paintings is their ability to communicate vastness, where colour and form speak together. 'I went to abstract art through landscapes. Maybe I missed the mountains of Nepal or the expanse of the Himalayas. I thought that could be captured only on a bigger space, and that's why I started painting large canvases.' (Soma Das, 'Being Laxman Shreshtha: The untold story of the legendary abstract artist',, 19 August 2016)

Shreshtha, over the years, has became reclusive; something he attributes to the discipline required to be an abstract artist. 'Abstract is the end result of painting. The tendency of an abstract artist is to be reticent. Reading, listening to music, silence are the main ingredients. In silence, you find what you have been searching for.' (ibid.)
