R.K. Laxman remains India's best known cartoonist and illustrator. His clever drawings are usually tinged with irony and humour, and provided insightful observations and commentary on the unfolding social and political happenings of the day. His elder brother, the well-known writer R.K. Narayan, often used his drawings and illustrations to accompany his short stories as well. Amusing to note, in retrospect, is that the Sir J.J. School of Art rejected his application to join them, citing lack of artistic skill! Their error was later rectified to some degree as he was invited to be the Chief Guest at the art school in later years.

His series of cartoons titled Wagle ki Duniya captured the life of the average Indian middle-class man, bringing to humorous life the trials and tribulations faced by him during the course of everyday life. The main character, a slightly nervous sales-clerk, identifiable in each drawing through his prominent belly and hooked nose, was depicted in various settings and different moods as he went about his daily business. Each cartoon would focus on a particular incident such as a doctor's visit, a festival celebration or a family gathering, usually highlighting the sales-clerk's unfortunate act of folly.

The series was conceptualised as a television sit-com that was aired on Doordarshan between 1988-1990. Interestingly, the television show was produced by Durga Khote Productions, the company founded by Bakul Khote’s mother and later run by Tina. Laxman was closely involved in every aspect of the show; engaging in both writing and narrating the script.

The seven works included in the current auction are individual cartoons that capture various amusing incidents from the life of the lead protagonist. Each is tinged with humour and offers a realistic and relatable glimpse into a middle class home.

Condition:

The colours of the originals are brighter than the catalogue illustrations, especially in the pinks, yellows and oranges and the paper tones are whiter than they appear in the catalogue illustrations. The paper of both sketches has discoloured slightly with age. Minor areas of foxing and staining as visible in the catalogue illustration. Good overall condition.
