This group of early, academic drawings was created in 1945 whilst Raza was still a student at the Sir J.J. School of Art. The works were probably done as part of Raza's formal training where he and his fellow students had to practice sketching and painting in a formal studio environment as part of the curriculum put into place by the Dean of their faculty.

The date of the works is interesting, as it was not until three years later that Raza visited the exhibition of classical sculpture at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. This was the same exhibition that had a profound impact on the art of his friends M.F. Husain and F.N. Souza, who both experimented with classical forms shortly after.
