Théâtre de l'Opéra / 3e Bal Masqué. 1899.
Masked balls had been held at the old Paris Opera House since the 1850s. By the end of the 19th century, up to four "grands bals masqués" per season (January to March) were held at the (new) Théâtre de l'Opéra. Gray created several designs for the events, and here presents a different perspective of the grand foyer of the Opera Garnier; a delightful Joker waves the wand for the third Bal Masqué of 1899.
