Jogesh Chandra Seal studied art at the Jubilee Art Academy in Calcutta, along with classmates Hemendranath Mazumdar and Atul Bose. In 1920 Mazumdar founded the Indian Academy of Art at his own residence in the city. Seal joined the Academy and worked alongside other renowned artists, which included Bhabhani Charan Law. The academy published its first tri-monthly journal in 1920, introducing upcoming artists and printing reproductions of their work in full colour. Seal’s work frequently depicted Bengali women in idealised rural settings, and his works show the strong stylistic influence of Mazumdar. In the current work, however, Seal has chosen to depict a lonely street girl in an urban setting, whose only companions are the birds that she feeds at her feet.

Sir Rajender Prasad Mukhopadhya and the King of Bardwan offered the artist consistent patronage, but his promising career was cut short when he died at the tragically young age of thirty one.
