About The Artist:

American painter, printmaker, and sculptor Sue Fuller (1914-2006) produced unique works inspired by the diverse techniques and practices she studied throughout her career. Fuller was a student of Hans Hoffman in 1934 before earning a BA from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1936. She received an MA from Columbia Teacher’s College in 1939. An accomplished printmaker, Fuller also explored other areas of art, including design, which she studied with Josef Albers and Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 at the New School, glass blowing, calligraphy, and lace making. An accomplished artist and teacher, Fuller has been honored with numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the Tiffany Fellowship (1948), National Institute of Arts and Letters Grant (1950), and the Women’s Caucus for Art Honor (1986).

Fuller has had solo exhibitions at venues across the US and abroad, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1951), the Smithsonian Institution (1947), the Nishi Machi School, Tokyo, (1954), and the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, Texas (1956). Her works reside in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Tate Gallery.

This untitled string construction wonderfully demonstrates one of Sue Fuller's most well-known techniques. An enthusiastic student, Fuller creates unique works that cross disciplines. This is wonderfully demonstrated with this 'Untitled' string construction, which draws on her knowledge of engineering, design, sculpture, and lace work.
