Stoneware Bottle Vase, Shimaoka Tatsuzō (Japanese, 1919-2007), 20th century

Product Description:

Square sided 'tokkuri' form vessel with cream and speckled brown glazes with alternating squares containing abstracted grass or herringbone designs, with impressed mark "Ta" to base, also with original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed "Tatsuzo" on the reverse of the lid.

Height 7.25 in. x Width 3.5 in.

Height 10.625 in. x Width 5.25 in. x Depth 5.25 in. (tomobako)

Condition:

Purchased by the current owner at Asia Art Fair, New York, ca. 1990.

 

About The Artist:

Shimaoka Tatsuzō, a proponent of the folk art movement Mingei, studied under Shōji Hamada (Japanese, 1894-1978). Tatsuzō died in Mashiko, Japan in 2007.
