About The Artist:

Stephen Antonakos was an American sculptor and installation artist known for his neon environments. The artist was born in Greece in 1926, but his family moved to New York in 1930. Antonakos attended the New York Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Brooklyn and then began working as a commercial illustrator. The artist gained inspiration for his works by walking through Midtown Manhattan at night. During the 1950’s, Antonakos experimented with assemblage, art made with assorted found objects. By the early 1960s, he began working with neon. Antonakos sketched the designs for his neon works on paper and then hired industrial fabricators to shape the neon tubing to his specifications.

Antonakos was a Minimalist, working in a style reduced to basic designs and simple materials, however, the glowing nature of his neon work is emotional and expressive. Many of Antonakos’ designs use incomplete geometric forms, called Gestalt, forcing the viewer to complete the composition.

His work has been installed in public places across the United States as well as in Italy, Greece, Israel, and Japan.
