'In those days there were two people who were distinctive - Souza and Palsikar. Palsikar had a lot of students who he influenced. If you see the early Gaitondes - not his abstracts but even earlier, they were inspired by the technique Palsikar used. Mohan Samant, myself, even Akbar [Padamsee] to some extent, were very close to Palsikar... He chose the kind of convention that were true to his expression... He was deeply buried in Indian aesthetics and was a bhakta of Shiva... He was my teacher but a lot of people rejected him in those days because Paris was the Mecca.' (Tyeb Mehta in an interview with Yashodhara Dalmia in Mumbai, January 1993, reproduced in Yashodhara Dalmia, The Making of Indian Art - The Progressives, New Delhi, 2001. p. 68)
