About The Artist:

Mart Stam designed the first cantilevered chair in 1926 which was further developed by Marcel Breuer (1902 - 1981). Mart Stam was director of the Berlin-Weissensee School for the Applied Arts between 1950 and 1952. The chairs were produced by the Italian furniture company, Columbus (Milan). In the 1920s, Columbus had a licensing agreement to produce Thonet designs for the Italian market. It was common at this time that Thonet negotiated production licenses for different countries due to high import tarifs.
