About The Artist:

Salgado began his career as a traveling photographer for several photojournalism organizations, including Magnum, which has produced some of the best photographers of the 20th century. This particular image is from a series shot in the Sahal part of Africa in 1984 and 1985 that documented the effects of a severe drought and neighboring war on the people of Mali, Chad, Ethiopia and the Sudan. Salgado worked alongside teams of doctors from the organization Doctors Without Borders to capture the severity of life in that part of Africa. This image hauntingly embodies the entire project and the individuals he photographed.
