Scarce Big Brother Handbill from The Fillmore East

Scarce Big Brother Handbill from The Fillmore East

Item Description:

This extremely rare postcard advertised the first show that was held at The Fillmore East in March 1968. The performance was lauded by the press, citing Janis as ranking in sexual pizzazz with Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, and praising “her belting, groovy style,” mixing Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown. The image is pictured in The Art of Rock as Plate Number 2.99, and it was produced as both a poster and postcard. The poster is excessively rare and commands around $15,000—the postcard is nearly as tough, although less expensive. The image was designed by Charles Brandwynn and the photograph of Big Brother was taken by Linda Eastman—later known as Linda McCartney.
