About The Artist:

Rudolf Bauer was one of the foremost abstract artists in the world in the 20s. Together with Kandinsky, Bauer was one of the fathers of non-objective painting. The non-objective style of painting is work that does not depict anything that exists in the material or objective world. In a sense, it is pure abstraction.

Before he achieved recognition in the 20s, Bauer supported himself by producing illustrations and caricatures for popular magazines of the period. This drawing is a good example of this type of work.

Despite his fame as an artist and the wealth that came with that success, Bauer was nearly forgotten by the 60s and 70s for a variety of reasons. Over the last twenty years, however, Bauer’s reputation is becoming restored. Important collectors and institutions are acquiring his work, books are being published about him and his art, and exhibitions have been mounted or are being planned. There was even an off broadway play about him (“Bauer”) that was presented in New York in 2014.
