Robert Indiana (American, b. 1928), "KvF II" from "The Hartley Elegies", 1990, screenprint, signed and numbered

Item Description:

Screenprint in colors, titled in pencil lower left "KvF II", signed and dated " '90", and editioned "1/50" lower edge, framed and glazed.

Published in the early 1990s, Robert Indiana"€™s The Hartley Elegies are an homage to American modernist and Lewiston native Marsden Hartley, a painter and poet with whom Indiana finds artistic and personal kinship. The imagery in these ten large-scale prints is drawn from Hartley"€™s 1914-15 "€œGerman Officer"€ paintings, created after the death of the young soldier Karl von Freyburg, a devastating event in Hartley"€™s life.

KvF II, the second of Robert Indiana"€™s Hartley Elegies, is a tribute to the relationship between the painter Marsden Hartley and the German soldier Karl von Freyburg. Indiana, by painting the names of the two men in a large central ring, links them directly and reveals what is veiled behind symbols in Hartley"€™s War Motif series (1914).
