Item Description:

RARE PRE-CIVIL WAR "WESTERN" U.S. POCKET MAP - "Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning's Traveller's Guide Through the Western States", published 156 William St. at Ann St, New York, 1856. In brown leather with gilt blindstamped title and decoration, having a route book with schedules for railroad and steamboat, distances between points. Hand colored engraved map on thin vellum paper has vignettes of Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati and St. Louis, states included are Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and part of Kansas (Indian Territories). The map itself is 21 1/2" x 26 3/4", has tear lower left, separation at folds on right, color still fresh and brilliant. The binding is 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", features a gilt steamboat. The book is inscribed in pencil "Moses Hawkins, later of Norway, Maine". Some wear to binding, but generally good condition for this rare pocket map.
