Rare and Early Man’s Quilled Shirt, Likely Mandan

Rare and Early Man’s Quilled Shirt, Likely Mandan

Item Description:

Rare and Early Man’s Quilled Shirt, Likely Mandan
Striking and exquisite Mandan man’s shirt from the Upper Missouri River area, circa 1850s-60s. Finely quilled, beaded and constructed, the shirt features quilled hide strips overlaid down both sleeves, and also over both shoulders and down the front and back of the tanned hide, which is light and supple. The tightly woven quillwork features blue and red three-point or feather designs on a yellow field, with the panels then trimmed in rows of delicate, tiny blue seed beads. Both the front and back feature a triangular hide bib which is covered with red and blue wool trade cloth that bisects the bib so that each color forms its own triangle in turn, recalling the red and blue quillwork designs. The trade cloth is also trimmed in the same tiny blue beads, and the bib is trimmed with thick short fringe. Long, thick hide fringe hangs from the quilled panels, front and back. Minor quill loss and some holes in trade cloth, but otherwise in remarkable condition. 46" tall by 60 1/2" wide. An early, important and magnificent example.
Includes custom wall stand.
