Item Description:

Barli Sasmitawinata was a painter who began to pursue painting in the 1930s and was part of the "Group of Five" which also included Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, and Wahdi. He began to study painting at the studio owned by Jos Pluim Mentz, a Dutch painter who lived in Bandung. He also studied under the Italian painter Luigi Nobili who also lived in Bandung, in the 1950s he continued his fine arts education in Europe, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris, 1950 and Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam, 1956. This is represented in his works, demonstrating the mastery of painting detailed anatomy.

Although he experimented with abstraction and analytical cubism, he did realistic drawings of human figures. This Portrait of a Farmer shows the artist’s great talent as an artist, who understood human anatomy.

He is known as a person who emphasizes the importance of art education. In 1948 he founded the studio Jiwa Mukti with Karnedi and Sartono. After completing his education abroad, he founded Sanggar Rangga Gempol in the Dago area, Bandung in 1958. He also taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and at the fine arts department at the Teaching and Educational Institute (IKIP). Bandung. Barli later taught more students informally at the studio. In 1992 he founded the Bandung Barli Museum
