Literature:

Best known for his sinuous forms of felines, Popo Iskandar is celebrated as one of the early pioneer artists in Indonesia. His fascination with felines began in the early 1960s. The subject matter of his paintings started with cats, which later evolved into sinuous leopards in the 1980s. The menagerie of animals subsequently included roosters, as they become part of Popo’s expressionist journey to uncover the innermost essence of his subjects through artistic forms. In his paintings, the beauty of the line is given its maximum expression – a distillation of artistic elements that are achieved after his long years of aesthetic exploration. An examination of his oeuvre will reveal that his style is influenced by the minimalistic aesthetics of various art movements, with Chinese calligraphy forming part of his inspiration. The simplified reduction of forms in his paintings revealed the artist’s struggle with physical forms, exposing his subject matter through its essential components and inner meaning.
