About The Artist:

Pierre Laprade was a post-Impressionist French painter known for his watercolors. He was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montauban, France and at the Académie Carrière in Paris, France. After visiting Italy in the early twentieth century, Laprade was inspired by the intimate interiors and themes of melancholia that he saw the Italian painters exploring. Laprade's first public exhibition of his works was at the Salon des Independants in 1901. After, he had exhibited internationally, including at the 1913 Armory Shows in New York and Chicago. The Salon des Independants was part of a French avant-garde movement that believed artistic taste should not be ruled by juried exhibitions and authoritative societies of artists. Laprade, working in his post-Impressionist style, strove to challenge the Impressionist style of painting, which very popular in his time. Unlike the Impressionists, the post-Impressionists did not aim to capture natural light while quickly painting with loose brushstrokes "en plein air", or outdoors, but instead often used artificial light, painted clearly defined forms, and did not gravitate towards depicting the idealized countryside.

This still life was perhaps influenced by the artist Paul Cezanne's paintings of fruit, and was certainly influenced by the Italians. Both Laprade and Cezanne often used a muted color palette for the background and warm tones for the subjects in the foreground. Laprade's brushstrokes are broad, but he treated the reflection on the glass vase very delicately. His Italian influences are evident in the wilting flowers, their petals falling off, perhaps meant to allude to the intersection of beauty and death.
