Philip and Kelvin LaVerne (American, 20th century), Persephone Enslaved Coffee Table, bronze and glass, ca. 1969

Lofty says:

“While it might seem inappropriate to most people to enjoy cocktails around a table supported by a bronze naked women in distress, bound by rope, one could make the argument that this example of functional art serves both as sculpture and conversation starter. Persephone was the beautiful daughter of Zeus who was abducted by and then married to Hades of the Underworld while picking flowers in a field one day. Because her mother, Demeter, managed to broker a deal whereby Persephone could return to Earth half the year, the spring and summer seasons became a time of harvest and fertility, while the rest of the year the crops and vegetation went into decline. Harvest and fertility are always good occasions to celebrate.” - Ursula LeBaron
