About The Artist:

Born in Berlin in 1937 to internationally transient parents, Peter Max spent his first ten years in Shanghai, China. In 1953, Max’s parents decided to make a permanent home in New York City. Young Max was influenced by Pop culture, notably American comic books including Flash Gordon and Captain Marvel, jazz, radio broadcasts, and movies. After completing high school, Max studied painting at the Art Students League, where he focused on commercial illustration and the graphic arts. In the 1960s, Max developed his "cosmic" 60s illustration style, characterized by distinctive line work and bold color combinations, and inspired by “new-age” meditative and spiritual teachings. Max became famous for this style; an eight-page cover story in Life Magazine confirmed that he had captured the imagination of a generation. Max devoted himself to canvas painting in the 1970s. He has been designated the Official Artist for the Grammys, the New Orleans Jazz Festival and the Woodstock Music Festival.
