Faune Cavalier, 1956 (A.R. #336)

Inside a decorative ring of grinning faces and double-ended arrows, a faun sits astride a bow-legged horse. Spear held aloft, the subject looks out at the viewer as though intending to jump to the ground and run forward. The horse beneath him, rendered in quick, decisive strokes like the rest of the composition, wears a bemused expression. The faun, half-human and half-goat, is a forest spirit who can be helpful or mischievous, depending on his whim. Picasso captures the creature's multiple personalities in this large, attractive work, including details both humorous and insightful.
