About The Artist:

Niek van der Plas is a Dutch artist who was born in Leiden in province of South Holland. Van der Plas is a self taught artist who has perfected his own style of Impressionism under the encouragement of his father, a house painter and decorator. The artist spent the majority of his childhood in the Dutch fishing village of Katwijk. His memories of the beaches and dunes are reflected in his work, many of which are paintings of beaches and harbors.

During a visit to The Hague, van der Plas was impressed by artist Henrik Willem Mesdag's Panorama. The work is housed in a custom built gallery and is one of the largest panorama paintings in the world. Mesdag employed the use of real sand to envelop his viewers in the 1880s beach scene. Van der Plas was influenced by artists of The Hague School, like Mesdag, who during the late nineteenth century reacted against realist painting in favor of looser brushwork that captured natural light and atmosphere. Van der Plas continues in the tradition of The Hague School and plein air painting, though his typical palette is brighter and his scenes are usually sun soaked. His technique is also informed by the Impressionists, who sought to express natural light and the subtleties of light and shadow using broad and expressive brushwork.

Van der Plas is well known for his scenes of beaches, bulb fields, and city streets of Amsterdam and Maastricht in the Netherlands. His paintings are full of light and vivid colors and help convey a sense the playfulness. In this work of a carnival fair ground, colors dance under a clear blue sky. Carnivals are places of a variety of sights and sounds and van der Plas illustrates this experience by incorporating dabs of color against a shimmering ground. His loose, Impressionistic brushwork conveys the movement of the carnival rides and the energy of the fair ground visitors.
