Item Description:

"First Farmer of the Land", depicting Washington on horseback overseeing his Plantation laborers, charcoal drawing, initialed lower left 'N.C.W.', in gold metal leaf flat panel molded wood frame under glass, OS: 48" x 41", SS: 41 1/2" x 34 1/2". Paper toned.

This was the cover for the Feb 1946 issue of the "Country Gentleman' magazine and was used in its unfinished state after Wyeth's tragic death in Oct 1945, when his car was struck by a train, killing NC and his name-sake young grandson instantly. The painting was on his easel with this drawing on a nearby wall, he had worked on it that morning. The painting is displayed at the N.C. Wyeth Studio owned by the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, PA. The drawing is in their catalog raisonne.
