Item Description:

NATIVE AMERICAN STONE MAUL - Taino (Arawak people of Caribbean) Cohoba Pestle with Head, made of carved grey hardstone (1000-1500 CE). Used to crush hallucinogenic cohoba seeds for ceremonial consumption. The upward facing head is well made with typical features. 8" tall. Repair to foot. Taino "behiques" (shamans) inhaled the cohoba from a special carved pedestal, the accessories often featured a trance-like visage of the priest, connecting the cycles of life and death in this culture.
