Italian Gilt Brass Carriage Alarm Clock, La Vallee, designed by Matthew Norman, Como, with a Swiss made movement, ed. 200, ca. 1980

Product Description:

Modern carriage alarm clock, designed by Matthew Norman of La Vallee in Como, Italy with a Swiss made movement, no. 29 of the edition of 200, circa 1980. A rarely seen example of this Baroque ornate case design by Matthew Norman. Together with fitted red leather case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Case:

Rococo gilt brass carriage clock with a folding handle in the opera style. The frame is built of gilt brass with fixed beveled glass panels at front and sides. The rear panel is hinged in order to access the movement. An oval glass on the top of the case allows observation of the platform escapement. Each gilt brass surface is decorated with intricate rococo style engraving. Case is in a bombe style and rests on turned brass button feet.

Dial:

White porcelain fired on copper and features blued steel Bregeut hands. The smaller alarm dial has Arabic numerals and half-hour markers.

Movement:

The 11 jewel, 8 day, double spring powered movement, a Matthew Norman Calibre 1754A, features an alarm function but no strike and no repeat function. Two large winding arbors provide for winding of the main spring and the alarm spring. Two small arbors provide for setting time and alarm (bell at bottom of case). A regulating lever is accessible at the top of the movement in order to adjust the speed of the movement.

This is the most ornate of all the Matthew Norman clocks, although it does not have the multiplicity of movement complications of the more expensive models.
