About The Artist:

Born in 1591 to a Valencian shoemaker, Jusepe de Ribera was a Baroque Spanish painter and printmaker known for his dramatic depictions of religious and mythological subjects. Heavily influenced by the works of Caravaggio, Caracci and the Italian Baroque school, he created most of his work in Italy, after settling in Naples in 1616.

Ribera's work consisted primarily of religious subjects, although he also produced a number of classical and genre works, as well as several portraits. The theme of martyrdom features prominently within his oeuvre, and he used tenebrism coupled with dynamically rendered figures to convey and emphasize the physical and mental suffering of his subjects.

This work in the manner of Ribera shows a subject typical of the artist. Entitled "The Tears of St. Peter" or "Las Lagrimas de San Pedro," it captures the moment when Peter acknowledges his denial of Christ and the bitter regret and sorrow that ensues.
