About The Artist:

"I'm inventing new processes in the making of sculpture and painting; I'm redefining how we see and think about form, so it's a formal pursuit and not a pursuit about feminism and political thinking. It's about the development of ideas and feelings that have a progression in my personal context." Lynda Benglis

Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1941, Lynda Benglis went on to pursue a degree in fine arts at the Newcomb College for Women at Tulane University before completing her studies at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in the 1960s. During this time, Benglis was deeply influenced by the proliferation of Process Art, Minimalism, and Feminist art in New York and began incorporating nontraditional materials such as natural latex rubber and polyurethane foam into her practice. Despite formally training in painting and ceramics, she is perhaps known for her sculptural contributions, which have been celebrated in a number of solo exhibitions.

Today, the artist’s explorations of metaphorical, sexual, and biomorphic shapes are housed in a variety of notable institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Benglis was also the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975 and has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
