About The Artist:

Joe Talirunili and his cousin, David Laluk, were founding members of the Purivnituq print shop in Canada.

Talirunili is best known for carving a theme erroneously entitled "Migration." A sculpture from this series titled "The Migration" (c. 1970) sold for $290,000 against an estimate of $100,000-150,000 at Waddington's, Toronto, Canada, in 2012. This work depicts a party stranded on an ice flow during the return from his own baptism, or his heroic sea rescues.

Three other subjects dominate Talirunili's repertoire and have earned him the title "The Chronicler": heavily accoutered stone figures signifying wealth and status; stone-cut prints depicting summer or winter hunting scenes, often simultaneously; and enormous, overpowering owls, which are a regular feature of his work. His carvings and prints, nonconformist and crudely executed, command an emotional response and have a wide international representation in public and private collections.

Joe created approximately seventy different prints in his lifetime and his graphic designs were added to the Puvirnituq annual print collections in the 1960s. Joe was also a draughtsman and sculptor - one of Joe's sculptures was featured on a 1978 Canadian postage stamp.
