About The Artist:

Lee W. Hughes was passionate outdoorsman and advocate of painting in plein-air. Hughes was born in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1930.

Hughes was prolific and found solace in his work. After serving in the Korean War, he studied at Paier College of Art and School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

His paintings are often described as impressionist. His canvases are loosely and confidently brushed and are seemingly painted with spontaneity and speed. Hughes' study of nature is personal and sensitive, often illustrating the effects of light and atmosphere.

Hughes is highly collected in the Northeast. He has exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. and Zhejiang Provincial Museum. In 2007, a retrospective of the artist's work was held at the The Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, NJ. His work is also represented in numerous public and private collections.

This work depicts a bridge in Califon, New Jersey. In many ways it is reminiscent of paintings by the modern masters - Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley come to mind. Like, Monet and Sisley, Hughes preferred to paint out of doors, a technique which enables him to more accurately record his sensations and the changing conditions of his environment. The reflections of light and foliage on the water, heighten the sensation of movement and lend the scene a palpable immediacy. The almost unfinished and sketch-like quality of the landscape illustrate Hughes' nuanced understanding of the materiality of his medium.
