About The Artist:

Lê Phô was born 1907 in Vietnam. After graduating from the L'É©cole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, where he was a member of the inaugural class, the artist won a scholarship to study painting in Paris. Following a brief return to Vietnam where he taught at his alma matter, the artist returned to Paris, where he served as a jury member for the 1937 Éxposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life).

Lê Phô had his first solo show in Paris the following year. He regularly participated in the Salon des Indépendants, an outlet for artists to exhibit work outside of the confines of the more conservative juried shows, held at the Grand Palais. Other members of this group included Bernard Buffet, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Juan Gris, Vincent van Gogh, and Louis Valtat.

Lê Phô died in Paris in 2001. His work is held in several institutional collections, including the Museum d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Vietnam Museum of Modern Art, and the Oklahoma Art Center.

A work by Lê Phô set an international auction record for a Vietnamese artist in November 2014, when Christie's auction house sold a work by the artist for $840,000.
