Landmark CGC-Certified 9.9 Original FD-26 Poster

Landmark CGC-Certified 9.9 Original FD-26 Poster

Item Description:

Sure to attract worldwide attention, we are proud to offer the finest example of this rare poster ever offered for sale. When we first saw this amazing poster, we were speechless. It is simply flawless—as bright, fresh and superb as the day it was printed. While it should go without saying, it is the highest grade given to an original FD-26 poster by CGC.

Long regarded as the “trademark” of the Grateful Dead, this is the poster that truly defined the band’s image and the artwork on subsequent posters. Due to the popularity of this poster from “Day One,” originals are pretty tough to find in high grade. Generally, people who had this poster would tack it to the wall, move sometime later, take it down, and hang it up again in their new place. It is very common for these to have extensive corner damage from tape and tacks, as well as aging and fading from exposure to sunlight.

The price of original FD-26 posters has climbed steadily through the last seven years. It is now common for Very Fine examples with tack holes and aging to bring $15,000-20,000 . A CGC-certified 9.4 example broke the $50,000 barrier and a CGC-certified 9.8 example brought $118,750 at auction in November 2019. The reasons for this are many. First, it is the most iconic psychedelic concert poster in the world. Second, these are scarce in any condition. As early Family Dog posters go, these are one of the most difficult to find in Near Mint condition, let alone this state of preservation. Third, the print run for the original posters was quite small, especially when compared to the population of Grateful Dead fans.

If you look at the price levels of virtually every other collectable, an FD-26 at $118,750 or even $250,000 seems ridiculously cheap. A 1962 Ferrari GTO at $48.4 million, a 1933 $20 gold piece at $7.59 million, a #1 Action comic book at $3.2 million, a Honus Wagner baseball card at $3.12 million, and a stamp from British Guiana for $9.5 million are but a few examples of the heights the collectables markets can reach. For those who will loudly exclaim that these posters are not commodities or collectables, but rather are art, let’s not forget that Da Vinci painting at $450 million. It would be easy to write pages of information about this poster, most of which is well-known to the collecting world. Suffice it to say that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector or connoisseur of the finest in collectibles.
