La Dame de Chez Maxim’s. ca. 1910.
The only apparent link between "The Lady of Chez Maxim's” and "The Doorman of Chez Maxim’s” (see PAI-XXXIII, 411) is that their promiscuities played themselves out at the Parisian night life landmark. It would seem as if this lighthearted evening of indiscretions at the Bouffes Parisiens rotated around the high-kicking exploits of the title’s popular gal—a prototypical unflappable flapper, if you will. De Losques was the pseudonym of David Thoroude, who studied law and started out as a law firm employee before switching to art. This is one of the many theatrical posters he created, along with magazine illustrations and caricatures, from 1904-1914. His career was cut tragically short by his death in aerial combat during World War I.
