About The Artist:

Born in Inchon, South Korea, Kyu Nam Han obtained his bachelor's degree at Seoul National University, and his master's degree at Ohio State University. A citizen since 1972, he has exhibited in various parts of the United States, including Manhattan. He has also produced two public murals, one for American Express headquarters at the World Financial Center, in New York, the other for the Peace Plaza in Tenafly, New Jersey.

Kyu incorporates elements of both Eastern and Western artistic traditions in his artwork. Well-educated in Modernism, the artist is influenced by Abstract Expressionism, an American artistic movement that valued spontaneous processes. His bright and varied color palette is reminiscent of the works of Raoul Dufy, a French artist who also painted flat landscapes in rich colors. In the tradition of Eastern art, Kyu's New York scenes are flattened, but then a fractured grid is added as an overlay, a nod to Western perspective and structure.

"Night Scene Time's Square" is characteristic of Kyu's New York work. The painting confronts the viewer head-on with a view of the busy Midtown neighborhood. Kyu has painted this scene in bright colors with short, measured brush strokes, and the colors vibrate off of each other and seem to melt into one. The evenly laid grid adds a sense of order to the painting, keeping it from feeling chaotic or crowded.
