About The Artist:

Kiyoshi Saitō was born in Fukoshima, Japan, in 1907. He started his career painting store signs before moving to Tokyo in 1932 to study art at the Hongo Painting Institute. By the time he executed the two woodblock prints above, he had already won the S‹ão Paulo Biennale in South America in 1951, one of the first Japanese to do so. Saitōs work by the 1960s tended to have a stylishly two-dimensional take on traditional Japanese themes. A woodblock print that Saitō made of then Prime Minister Eisaku Satō appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1967. His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art, the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum, and the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco.
