About The Artist:

Kim Yun Shin is a Korean artist who has lived and worked in Argentina since 1984. Kim was born in 1935 in San Won, Korea. Notably, at age 24, she was only the third woman to graduate the Hongik University Arts School in Seoul, South Korea, where she majored in sculpture. After her studies in Seoul, she attended the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France, where she studied sculpture and engraving from 1964 to 1969. During this time, Kim used mainly iron for her sculptural material. After leaving Paris, she taught sculpture at the University of Sangmyung in Seoul until 1983. Kim visited Argentina in the early 1980s, where the beauty of the country, especially the texture of the native carob trees, astounded her. In 1984, she quit her teaching job and permanently settled in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In Argentina, her sculptural medium changed from iron to carob wood. At age fifty, Kim opened a fine arts museum in Buenos Aires, Museo Kim Yun Shin, which aims to preserve and exhibit her sculptures and paintings for students and researchers as well as to enrich the cultural life of the city.

To celebrate this prolific artist, the Hanwon Art Museum in Seocho, Seoul, is planning a retrospective exhibition of her work entitled "Sixty Years of the Art of Kim Yun Shin: The Music of the Soul." The summer 2015 exhibition will exhibit seventy of Kim's works. Her work is also represented in the collections of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea, the Museum of Modern Art in Argentina, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico, and the International Sculpture Park in China.

Kim's work is an exploration of the artist's spirituality. A practicing Buddhist, Kim seeks to convey a feeling of being one with the universe in her artwork. Though her earlier works were prints and sculptures, Kim now works in oil paint. This work, "Florecimiento del alma" is part of Kim's series "Serie de alma Sonora" (Song of the Soul). In this series, Kim paints organic and geometric shapes in bold, pure colors. To texturize her work, Kim scratches away paint, using the canvas to add dimension to her paintings. Her bright, abstract compositions are uplifting and harmonious and draw influence from both her Korean background and her new Argentinian home.
