About The Artist:

Karl Hartmann was a German painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is well known for painting young street urchins in humorous scenes. Hartmann was possibly influenced by Realists like Gustave Courbet, who was among the first artists to paint the working class in the mid 19th century. In the work of the French Realists, including painters Jules Breton and Jean-Francois Millet, farmers and workers are romanticized, consecrated, and even made into heroic individuals. Hartmann's works of children on the German farms transmit the same ideas that heroism can be found in work and through the closeness to nature. Hartmann's artistic style is also akin to early French Impressionism with broad brushstrokes and attention to natural light and shadow.

In ''The Duet'', Hartmann painted two shop boys on their break. Hartmann's painting of the boys is lighthearted and depicts them as if they were older men. With their worn aprons and thermos, the boys seem to sing about life's struggles, and one holds a cigarette. However, their young faces show that they are not weathered workers, but children whose feet cannot even reach the floor. Hartmann used broad brushstrokes similar to that of Courbet, while capturing the delicate details such as the stripes on the shirt and the folds of the accordion. Rather than being a romantic tribute to the working class, this painting instead is a parody.
