About The Artist:

Jules Cheret (1836-1932) was a pioneer in his approach to modern poster production; he created with coloration and perspective that precipitated a revolution of color in the art world. Perhaps his work inspired the Fauve painters whose vibrant works were first publicly exhibited in 1933, the year after his death. Because of his developments, “there was fun and fantasy, glimpses of laughter, whirling of dancers decorating the kiosks of Paris, dazzling the senses and creating a movement of gaiety that had not existed before.”In Paris, Cheret was raised in poverty by a family of artisans. In addition to being a lithographer, he was a painter in oil and pastel. He was 13 when his schooling ended, and his father, who was a typographer, arranged a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer; this experience taught Cheret the prevalent methods of design reproduction. Cheret researched and performed experimentation with design processes; this all culminated in his first poster creation in 1858. Cheret was known for creating posters for theatre, music-hall, and circuses. His style evolved as he learned more about his craft. In 1866, he returned to Paris and opened a studio where he produced posters that made images seem crucial and three dimensional; his implementation of text was considered a precursor for modern day advertisement. His audience praised the use of vibrant colors and how he caught the figures in mid action.
