John Rhoden (American, 1918-2001), African Figure, bronze sculpture, ca. 1975

Item Description:

Mounted on base, apparently unsigned

This figure reflects the influence of traditional African sculpture on Rhoden's work. This work is similar in form to "Nesaika", Rhoden's monumental sculpture installed in front of The African American Museum in Philadelphia, and may be a study for that piece. The sculpture reveals artist's knife markings, fusing, and other inconsistencies in the surface modeling which suggest that this is an experimental/study piece and not a final presentation.

Condition:

Exhibits spotty patina and extensive pitting and corrosion, requires cleaning. Please contact cataloging@lofty.com for specific condition questions.

Provenance:

Gifted to current owner's father in 1975 by Rhoden during a studio visit, then inherited by descent. The owner's father and the artist were classmates at Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama.
