About The Artist:

Jean Cohen American 1927-2013 was a member in good standing of the New York School during the 1940's-1980's and there attended many meetings of 'The Club' which had a profound influence on her. Her artwork was based in modernism and during the 1950s morphed into abstract expressionism then in the 1960's and forward morphed again into a painterly hard edge style influenced by Alex Katz, Myron Stout, Leon Polk Smith all who were her close friends. Cohen was born in The Bronx, Studied painting at The Cooper Union 1946-1948. Married to painter Alex Katz 1950-1956. She was awarded a Skowhegan painting scholarship 1949 & 1950. Between 1949-1960 She divided her time living & painting in Maine during the spring & summer and in New York City in the fall & winter. From 1962 to 1985 Cohen lived & painted during the summer in a small cabin on the shoreline in Provincetown MA and there shared time w/ painter John Grillo. Jean Cohen's first exhibition was in 1951 at Peter Cooper Gallery in New York in a two person show w/ husband Alex Katz. During the 1950's Cohen exhibited at Tanager Gallery & Area Gallery, both in the East Village New York where she lived during the fall winter months. Cohen was a founder of Landmark Gallery in SoHo New York 1970-1982. Member of American Abstract Artists 1967-2000 and published in 2 editions of AAA print portfolios. 1970-2010 exhibits at Marcella Geltman Gallery, Cape Split Gallery, The Bronx Museum, Louisiana State University Gallery, Landmark Gallery, The National Academy, Aucocisco Gallery. Taught at U. of Maine, Philadelphia College of Art, Louisiana State University. After 1983 Jean Cohen lived in Long Island for 30 years and for years kept an apt on 8th street in NYC. Her work is in the permanent collection of The Whitney Museum of American Art, Wright State University Art Museum, and The Muscarelle Museum of Art.
