Item Description:

JAPANESE SHORT SWORD - Late 16th or early 17th c. Japanese Koto Period Wakazashi, probably Bizen, the blade having a strong hamon and boshi temper line, finely pointed kissaki and two high fuller grooves, the tang is unsigned. The furniture is very attractive with a nicely cast silvered iron tsuba of a writhing dragon in the ocean, single gilt menuki of a tiger, engraved habaki, mixed metal kashira butt cap and fuschi. The ray skin handle has been unwound, but has all components, including the original peg. Housed in a 19th c. Maki lacquer sheath that is missing the tip, but retains the iron Kogatana utility knife. Overall length: 25" (63.5 cm); blade length: 17 3/4' (45.5cm), weight: 13.64 oz (380.9g). Light corrosion to blade.
