About The Artist:

Jan van Heel was a highly imaginative twentieth century Dutch artist. Van Heel was constantly expanding his artistic style, searching to achieve the highest level of artistic expression. While his early work was figural, with recognizable subjects, flights of whimsy and nods to Matisse and Picasso, his later work focused on abstraction and the purity of color and texture. Henri Matisse was an early twentieth century artist who was well known for his use of line and color in revolutionary ways. Pablo Picasso's influence is visible in the abstractions and flat shapes of van Heel's work.

Known for his vitality and gusto, van Heel was also sentimental. His studio was often full of canvases that the artist could not bear to sell as he felt they were a part of his being. Van Heel is represented today in museum collections in the Netherlands as well as in Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and Brussels. He died in 1990.

Van Heel first painted the Spanish landscape in 1955 and returned to the subject again and again throughout his career. At the beginning of his ''Spain Period'', van Heel painted figuratively, favoring the Spanish landscape and its livestock. Slowly, his paintings transformed into expressions of the bare earth, the mountains and their tree lines, stones, and the scorching air around him. Van Heel became lost in the spell of the ever-changing Spanish countryside; he loved its unknowable and mysterious character. Many of the artist's works from this period were shown at The Hague's Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, one of the Netherland's greatest art museums, to much acclaim. Van Heel's works were often simply numbered and entitled ''Spanje'', the Dutch word for ''Spain''. This painting is not just an abstraction, but depicts the essence of the Spanish landscape in which van Heel immersed himself during his trips to Spain.
