About The Artist:

Irving Kreisberg b. 1919. Studied & graduated at Art Institute of Chicago late 1930's. Moved to Mexico City to live paint and study from 1941 to 1945. While in Mexico studied print making at Taller de Grafica where he made prints based on antiwar subjects. Back in New York in 1946 befriended Jacques Lipschitz who brought IK to the attention of art dealer Curt Valentin--who exhibited IK and who in turn referred Kriesberg to curator Dorothy Miller at The Museum of Modern Art. In 1952 Miller invited IK to participate in the 15 Americans exhibition which garnered Kriesberg wide critical acclaim--extant examples of the 15 Americans exhibition catalog are widely available. Kriesberg exhibited two more times at MoMA in 1955 and 1957. Over the course of a 65 year exhibition and teaching career IK exhibited in numerous important art galleries and exhibitions and was given three museum retrospective exhibitions including a 1962 retro at The Jewish Museum w/ exhibition catalog essay by Alan Kaprow; a 1960's retrospective at The Everson Museum in Syracuse NY and a 2010 retrospective at The Longview Art Museum in Texas. In addition to Curt Valentin Gallery Kriesberg was represented by other prominent art dealers including Graham/Duveen Gallery, Terry Dittenfas, Peter Findlay, and Lori Bookstein. Between 1958-1988 IK taught at Pratt, Columbia University and Yale University.
