Paper is wavy. Gouges to aluminum frame. Puncture to the cardboard backing. Water stain measuring less than one inch to lower left corner of mat (see image). About The Artist:

Ilya Bolotowsky was founding member and past president of the American Abstract Artists, part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts Project. This group was founded in 1936 "to promote and foster public understanding of abstract and non-objective art."

The painter, sculptor, and illustrator was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1907. He was married to the Russian American painter, illustrator and textile designer Esphyr Slobodkina. Bolotowsky taught at the liberal arts school Black Mountain College. He died in New York City in 1981. The American painter Kenneth Noland studied under Bolotowsky.
